[How-To] - Quickly Empty Trash on MacOS X

So, I often end up in situations where there is just too much data in my Trash and emptying Trash on a Mac can take ages. The annoying bit is – while Trash is being emptied – you can not delete anything else meanwhile. I ran into a situation today where I needed to reclaim my disk space on my internal disk and the only way to do so was to empty trash which had about the same size of stuff in it. Deleting via the Finder window can take ages as it counts the files and deletes them, it almost seems like an endless process.
Apparently, you can do so via the Terminal window
cd ~/.Trash
rm -rf *
That command recursively and silently deletes everything in Trash within minutes.

FACETIME iPhone 4 - Waiting for Activation Error

  • It seems quite a number of users a facing this problem.
  • In Malaysia, there are many cases especially for Celcom subscribers. Officially - only Maxis and Digi are selling iPhone 4. Celcom has yet to officially launch their iPhone 4.
  • My theory for those who are not able to get their Facetime activated is probably either due to the SMSC is unable to send the activation code to the users or Celcom is intentionally blocked this activation for the time being.
  • Blocking Facetime activation is a way to deter customers from buying Celcom's competitors iPhone 4.
  • That's my 2 cents worth of theory.
  • I purchased the iPhone 4 months ago and have no problem activating Facetime on my Celcom line. I think this problem just recently occurred for the new users.

[How-TO] - Download iOS 4.2.1 ipsw

You could update your iPhone 3G/3GS/4 or iPod Touch 2G/3G to iOS 4.2.1 using iTunes. You could download iOS 4.2.1 IPSW files from the below given direct download links by Apple.

[HOW-TO] - Untethered Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 Using Redsn0w 0.9.7

  • Breaking News! Thanks to the Source below!
  • Finally the waiting is over! You can now get your Untethered Jailbreak solution today!
  • Got the news from the Tweets...and its still Twittering like mad now!
  • Full details as shown in Redmond Pie website. Even the Dev-Team website has not been updated yet!
The iPhone Dev-Team have just released their “backup plan” (Redsn0w 0.9.7) for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. The just released beta version of Redsn0w will enable you to jailbreak (untethered) iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1.

Here’s what you will need to know before proceeding:
  • iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1
  • iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3.
  • Mac OS X
  • Access to iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.
  • If you rely on Ultrasn0w unlock, STAY AWAY from this version of Redsn0w.
  • Currently limited to iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G only.
The best thing about this “backup plan” is that it doesn’t require you to restore or re-jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Warning Note:
This is a beta tester program. Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!
Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.
Here’s how to do it:
Note: Skip to Step 2 if you have previously jailbroken (tethered) your iOS device on iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w.
Step 1: Restore your iOS device to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware and jailbreak it using Redsn0w by following our step by step guide posted here.
Step 2: This untethered jailbreak completely relies on SHSH blobs saved for 4.2b3 (iOS 4.2 Beta 3). To check whether you have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3, start Cydia and wait for it to completely load the main page. You should now see “SHSH: 4.2b3” on top as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 3: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b7 and connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Mac.
Step 4: Now download usbmuxd from here and extract it on your computer. Start Terminal inpython-client directory and then run the following commands as shown in the screenshot below.
chmod +x tcprelay.py
./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

Step 5: Start Redsn0w and point it to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware file.

Step 6: Now click “Next” and select “Jailbreak Monte” option, followed by selecting iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.

Step 7: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.

At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 8: Sit back and enjoy while Redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it fully jailbroken (untethered) on the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware.

[HOW-TO] - Downgrade iPad 2 And iPhone 4 From iOS 5 To iOS 4.3.3 With TinyCFW For Untethered Jailbreak

It’s worth noting that since TinyCFW was never intended for public release, it is rougher than Clint Eastwood’s beard. Don’t expect it to work flawlessly, and moreover, don’t complain if it doesn’t complete the job. Sure, it will modify an existing IPSW for an iPad 2 or iPhone 4 to update your baseband to the latest, and it will also create an IPSW which you can use with TinyUmbrella and iTunes to restore to a version of iOS of which you have conserved SHSH blobs. But, it’s not a jailbreak, nor an unlock, and will not protect your baseband, nor does it work with any device aside from the aforementioned.

Note:

TinyCFW only supports GSM version of iPad 2 and iPhone 4. All other iOS devices are not supported.
Requires Java
iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone 4 or iPad 2.
You’ll need 2.5GB of RAM, so your netbook probably won’t suffice this time around.
Step 1: Start the application by either double-clicking the .jar (for Mac) or running the .exe (for Windows), either of which can be found here.

Step 2: You’ll then be met with the application window. Click the top button and locate an IPSW you have saved SHSH blobs of.

Step 3: The app will then reveal the details of selected .IPSW such as firmware version and baseband, and also the baseband versions in the target .IPSW when you click the second button.

Step 4: Next, click ‘Save Target IPSW’ and let TinyCFW work its magic. Once the process is complete, you’ll be left with a file named .bbupdate.ipsw.

That’s it! You can now, via iTunes, (with TinyUmbrella playing the supporting role it does so well) restore your iPad 2 or iPhone 4 back to 4.3.3 (or other iOS 4 iterations), so long as you’ve saved the blobs in the past. Make sure your device is in DFU mode once you are performing the restore, otherwise it won’t work.

Once you have successfully downgraded back to iOS 4.3.3, follow our complete tutorial posted here on how to jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3 untethered using JailbreakMe.

[Review] - Solo Vintage - Leather Backpack (10 Dec. 2010)

  • Finally, the SOLO Vintage Backpack which I ordered have arrived today!
  • It took UPS about 7 days to reach my home (Shipped on Dec. 3 and arrived on Dec 10).
  • In the UPS website, it stated the goods will be delivered on Dec. 13 but UPS delivery man called me at 4.40pm and told me that he is in front of my house!
  • Since tomorrow is a holiday (the King's Birthday), I decided to take a trip to UPS Office at Jalan Tandang (Wisma Ali Bawal 1).
  • Reached there at 6.50 pm and voila!
  • The backpack is perfect! The leather quality is magnificent!

UPDATE (Dec. 25, 2012)
  • I have been using this backpack for about two (2) years now!
  • Even though the colour has changed to brown instead of the dark brown as shown below, it still looked fantastic! Even tho' I have some scratches, but it didn't bother me because that's what a leather backpack should bear.
  • I must confessed that the quality of this bah is excellent and I believed it will last me for more years to come!

[How-To]: Setup HP Deskjet 2050 using Airport Express and Windows XP

I decided to buy Airport Extreme base station. I was looking forward to being able to share my HP Deskjet 2050 off the USB port but didn't know if my old XP PC would be able to use it. After much searching, I found these instructions and all is well:
  1. Make sure the printer is recognised by the base station.
  2. Select 'Add a new printer' in Windows
  3. Select 'Local Printer' in the dialog box (auto detect and install should be off), click next.
  4. Choose 'Create a new port' and "Standard TCP/IP Port'. Click next.
  5. For the printer IP address, enter the address of the base station ie. 192.169.0.112. The port name will be filled automatically. Click next.
  6. For the device type, choose 'Hewlet Packard Jet Direct', then click Finish.
  7. Choose your printer from the list and follow the rest of the prompts to install and configure the driver.

Foursquare Better than Garmin GPS

  • There are times when my Garmin GPS unable to find the right address.
  • Or there are times when you didn't bring your GPS along and you are "lost".
  • This is when Foursquare come to the rescue.
  • For example, I wanted to find CWA (CIMB Wealth Advisor)'s location but somehow it was not registered in the Garmin although it can take me to Damansara Utama.
  • When I was at Damanasara Utama, I was quite lost to find the road.
  • Using Foursquare, I located CWA's location (Search in "Places")

  • Click "More Info" to see its location on a Map.

  • Click the RED dot to open the iPhone's Map app.

  • By clicking the "Directions", it will give the route from your existing location to the destination.

  • Follow the route. Voila!

DIY - Wireless HOME Networking

STEP 1 - Get a good Internet connection. I used TM's Unifi VIP10 package i.e. 10 Mbps

STEP 2 - Create a Home WiFi. Using DLink wireless router which have its own WiFi SSID, I connect a Time Capsule using Ethernet to the Dlink router with another new SSID. Time Capsule is configured in a Bridge Mode.

STEP 3 - Create a Network Attached Storage wirelessly. I connected 2 TB of WD USB Drives to the USB port of my Time Capsule. The Time Capsule serves as my Time Machine backup (500GB) and the WD drives serves as home storage.

STEP 4 - Create a Home IPTV solution. Using my Apple TV which is connected thru HDMI to my TV, I can now wirelessly stream music and movies to the Apple TV. It can stream in real time or stored in ATV itself. With shared iTunes library, I can also make 3 other Macbooks in my house to share their own personal library.

STEP 5 - Create a wireless printer. Using my cheap HP Deskjet 5020 Series printer. I connected it using my recently purchased Airport Express. Now, we can print wirelessly anywhere from the house.

STEP 6 - Stream music from anywhere in the house. WIth a speaker attached to my Airport Express, anyone with an iTunes can now stream their own favorite music to the speaker.

Bought an Airport Express 802.11n WiFi

  • Today, I thought of getting a networking solution for my USB HDDs. I figured an Airport Express would be able to connect via its USB interface and make itself recognized on my Home network.
  • The Airport Express seems to be out of stock almost in every Mac reseller shops (tried MacStudio and Low Yat and Berjaya, and also called all Machines outlet but to no avail).
  • Finally called Epicentre and lucky enough they said there is stock available. Thus, took a drive to Pavillion to purchase the RM 369 Airport Extreme.
  • The first I was trying to get it connected to my WiFi network. Using cable on Bridge Mode is quite easy and seamless.
  • However, I have dificulty in getting the WDS to work (using main and remote mode). I configured my Time Capsule which is connected in Bridge Mode to be set as WDS (main) and the Airport Express (remote WDS) but it doesnt work.
  • Finally, I tried the "Join the Wireless Network" setting and voila! It connects to one of the WiFi APs which I have set in my house.
  • Streaming the audio the AE is quite easy but unfortunately I am unable to recognize any USB drives which are connected to its USB.
  • A Google search showed that ONLY Airport EXTREME BS will be able to connect USB drives while Airport EXPRESS is NOT! Damn....!! There goes one of my feature to make a NAS of my USB drives.

  • Finally, I connect all my Western Digital HDDs (2 units of 1TB drives) to the Time Capsule directly.
  • And made my AE part of the Home Network....

[How-To]: Configure Airport Express with Hotel Ethernet

Step by step to configure the AirPort Express in bridge mode is outlined below. Note that you will need to use the AirPort Utility application for this. On your Mac computer, it's located as follows:

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.

Use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to check some of your settings on the Express.

  • Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
  • Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
  • Wireless Network Name = Your choice
  • Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g comatible)
  • Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
  • Wireless Password = Your choice
  • Verify Password
Click the Internet icon
  • Connect Using = Ethernet
  • Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
  • Update to save settings
Power down the Express and connect it to the hotel's ethernet jack using an ethernet cable.
Power up the Express
Open your browser to see if the hotel's internet page will appear so you can agree to terms, pay fees, etc.
Once you agree, you should be on the internet and wireless should be working.

[How-To]: Save SHSH Blobs Directly From iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Using iSHSHit

  1. I found out that this is a simpler way to save your SHSH. But you need to Jailbreak your iPhone first.
  2. iSHSHit is a new Cydia app that is an alternative to Tiny Umbrella. Thus, you don't need a computer to save the SHSH blobs.
  3. It lets you save and backup SHSH blobs directly off your iOS device. It also has the original functionality of being able to send your saved SHSH blobs via email, which is a very handy feature. It also automatically uses the Cydia On-File service, meaning that your SHSH blobs will also be saved on the Cydia servers.
  4. iSHSHit is very straight forward and simple to use. After installing it from Cydia, just click on the save icon at the top right corner, and wait for it to save your SHSH blobs to Cydia. Once your SHSH blob has been saved, you will get a message as can be seen in the screenshots below.
  5. In case you don’t already know, saving SHSH blobs have proved to be very useful for downgrading to older firmwares. Recent tweets from Comex suggests that they will also be required for untethered jailbreaks in future.
