[HOW-TO] - Fix Problem when you are Stuck at "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..." Absinthe Jailbreak iPhone 4S/iPad 2

So you've been at the beginning of the Absinthe jailbreak (see post here regarding HOW-TO Untethered jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4S/iPad 2) for a while and progress bar hasn't moved in the last 20-30 mins. Well, here's an easy fix.

  • Close Absinthe and slide to unlock your phone and go through all "setup options" until you get to the home screen of your iPhone (do not backup yet, just continue without backing up for now).
  • Go to Settings and "Erase All Content and Settings".
  • Now close iTunes on your computer when the device reboots and do not backup yet.
  • Now slide to unlock your phone again and go through all the options until you get "Activating Phone" screen comes up.
  • Wait for your phone to active (may take a couple minutes), then STOP.
  • Don't click anything more on your iOS device.

NOTE: Because Absinthe creates a backup and restores it onto your device as part of the way it gets files on the device, we recommend the device is mostly empty when you start the process. To do this, CREATE A BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST (connect to iTunes and sync). If you're using iCloud to backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Backup Now.
ONLY ONCE YOU'VE BACKED UP, on your device go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings. MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR CONTENT. You do not have to Erase All Content and Settings if you don't want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes (or seems to be almost forever!) to complete if you don't, depending on what's on your device.

  • Now open Absinthe and click "Jailbreak".
  • It shouldn't take more then a couple minutes to jailbreak.
  • Once it's complete and it tells you to "slide to unlock your device", continue through all the remaining setup options till you get your home screen once again.

NOTE: The Set Up iPhone (or iPad) GUI you see when you restore an iDevice will now appear. If you backed up with iCloud at the beginning of this tutorial, please choose Restore from iCloud Backup in the Set Up iPhone GUI, and restore from the backup you took at the beginning of this guide.
The iDevice will then restore from backup, reboot, and you're good to go.

  4. Great, I'm jailbroken but my data is not on the iPhone. When I put it back on the iPhone, Cydia is gone. I backed up, did the reset, configuere it till activation and klicked on "Jailbreak". Then I had to select if I wanted location services, etc., then I got the Absinthe Icon. But how do I get my data on the iPhone? I tried two times now. Pls. help.

  5. Adrian - Normally it will automatically ask from which backup you want to restore.

But you can try this... First, backup your iPhone (right click on your iPhone under devices and click Back Up). To restore from a backup, right click on your iPhone under Devices in iTunes and click Restore from Backup. You can then choose which iPhone backup you want to restore from. Hope this helps.

  7. Did you Go to Settings and "Erase All Content and Settings" (Please ensure you make a backup first!) ?
    Can you try again?

  8. Got an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0 but locked to an overseas carrier. I tried jailbreaking using absinthe on windows xp sp3, shows "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..." and the stays there for more than 1 hour.

I am not able go to the setup options as you mentioned in your post.
Is there any way to activate my iphone 4s or unlock to accept local carrier sim card or is there a way to skip "Please insert a sim card" to go to setup options.
    Please help.

    1. Don't try to upgrade the formware because it will just upgrade the baseband and will make it worse to find an Unlock solution. You can regularly check Dev Team website for Unlock solution (if any) - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

  9. Is your phone already unlocked at 5.0? If yes, I don't quite understand why you need to Jailbreak because I am not sure whether there is already a Unlock solution for 5.0

    1. No my phone is not unlocked at 5.0. I am not even able to update to new iOS 5.0.1.
I am not able activate the phone using the local sim card becuase it is locked to overseas carrier (sunrise - switzerland). Phone is brand new, got it as gift. Is there any way to unlock the phone (able to use local sim) and activate it.

    1. Unfortunately there is no solution for 4S unlock yet. Need to wait for Dev Team update.
Don't try to update the firmware to a higher baseband. It will make it worse to get an Unlock solution.

  14. This was the only solution for my ipad 2 but what is not said above is that:

    1. After Erasing settings and content you must go through the automatic set up process and have a functioning ipad BEFORE running Absinthe (as administrator)

    2. After the reboot you tap the Absinthe icon and let it do its thing.

    3. From iTunes run the restore from backup option that automatically appears (not the new ipad option)

    4. Don't panic when all your Apps are gone just start iTunes on your computer (if not running) and let it sync your apps.

    1. You need to restore from (fresh) 5.0.1 ipsw (if you downloaded earlier) and it will make your iphone as new.

  26. I have an iPhone 4S that is from over seas and I still cannot jailbreak through Absinthe because it is still stuck at the "beginning jailbreak" loading screen. I can't activate the phone when I plug it into iTunes because I only have an AT&T sim card. In order for me to access the "erase all content and setting," I bypassed the activation screen and followed your above instructions. Even still, Absinthe is still loading and will not jailbreak.....any suggestions?

  35. Thank you so much. I had been trying to make this work for 2 days. It took 1/2 hour after reading this.

  36. MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR CONTENT. You do not have to Erase All Content and Settings if you don't want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes (or seems to be almost forever!) to complete if you don't, depending on what's on your device
