[HOW-TO] - Jailbreak iPhone 4S/ iPad 2 Using Absinthe For Windows (iOS 5.0/5.0.1)

Today, Chronic Dev Team releases Greenpois0n Absinthe v.1.2.2 for Windows users which jailbreaks both iPhone 4S and iPad 2
Here's a new easy guide showing how to jailbreak your A5 device using Absinthe:

Remember that this guide is for only Windows users:

STEP 1: Download Absinthe jailbreak v.1.2.2 [Windows users]

STEP 2: After done downloading open Absinthe jailbreak in Administrator mode then plugin your iPhone 4S/ iPad 2:

STEP 3: Now allow the app to recognize your device and you will find 'Jailbreak" button appeared.

STEP 4: After the program is done running (and not a second before), go to your device’s home screen and locate the Absinthe icon. Click it. This executes the final stage of the jailbreak.

STEP 5: Now after the jailbreak is done, your device will restart and then you should see Cydia installed on your device :)

NOTE: If you are stuck at "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..", try to use the Fix in the previous post.

[HOW-TO] - Fix Problem when you are Stuck at "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..." Absinthe Jailbreak iPhone 4S/iPad 2

So you've been at the beginning of the Absinthe jailbreak (see post here regarding HOW-TO Untethered jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4S/iPad 2) for a while and progress bar hasn't moved in the last 20-30 mins. Well, here's an easy fix.

Close Absinthe and slide to unlock your phone and go through all "setup options" until you get to the home screen of your iPhone (do not backup yet, just continue without backing up for now).
Go to Settings and "Erase All Content and Settings".
Now close iTunes on your computer when the device reboots and do not backup yet.
Now slide to unlock your phone again and go through all the options until you get "Activating Phone" screen comes up.
Wait for your phone to active (may take a couple minutes), then STOP.
Don't click anything more on your iOS device.

NOTE: Because Absinthe creates a backup and restores it onto your device as part of the way it gets files on the device, we recommend the device is mostly empty when you start the process. To do this, CREATE A BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST (connect to iTunes and sync). If you're using iCloud to backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Backup Now.
ONLY ONCE YOU'VE BACKED UP, on your device go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings. MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR CONTENT. You do not have to Erase All Content and Settings if you don't want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes (or seems to be almost forever!) to complete if you don't, depending on what's on your device.

Now open Absinthe and click "Jailbreak".
It shouldn't take more then a couple minutes to jailbreak.
Once it's complete and it tells you to "slide to unlock your device", continue through all the remaining setup options till you get your home screen once again.

NOTE: The Set Up iPhone (or iPad) GUI you see when you restore an iDevice will now appear. If you backed up with iCloud at the beginning of this tutorial, please choose Restore from iCloud Backup in the Set Up iPhone GUI, and restore from the backup you took at the beginning of this guide.

The iDevice will then restore from backup, reboot, and you're good to go.

[HOW TO] - Jailbreak iPad 2 (or iPhone 4S) Using Absinthe [iOS 5.0.1 / iOS 5]

Step 1: Download Absinthe from this link and save the application in a folder named "Absinthe" on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder. Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

"Beginning jailbreak" (note this can really take sometime - in our case this step took more than 10 minutes on our iPad 2, though it was lot quicker on iPhone 4S). NOTE: If you want faster way and don't want to wait that long, you can try this method, check ---> HERE)

"Sending initial data" at this time you will notice that "Restoring in Progress" message on your iPad 2 (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

"Waiting for reboot"

"Waiting for device to finish rebooting" as your iPad 2 is rebooting.

"Preparing jailbreak data"

"Sending payload data" (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

Step 4: In the end you'll be prompted with the message informing you that the jailbreak is "Almost done - just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap "Jailbreak" icon to finish.

Step 5: Unlock your iPad. The icon you should look for is the Absinthe icon and not "Jailbreak", it may not be on the first home screen page so you're better off just searching for it using Spotlight.

Step 6: Launch the Absinthe app. It should load the greenpois0n site and reboot your iPad 2. After it is rebooted, you should see the Cydia icon.

That's it, your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken.

Troubleshooting tips:

Here are some troubleshooting tips if you hit an issue while jailbreaking your iPad 2 with Absinthe:

1. A number of readers have reported that they're getting "Error establishing a database connection"error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app. If you get that error message or white screen, the following trick seems to work:

Launch the Settings app
Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
However after a minute, your iPad 2 will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPad 2's home screen.

2. If it still doesn't help, just reboot your iPad 2 and start the process all over again. It may also be a good idea to disable your passcode when you try again as the tool gives a warning request that jailbreaking is most likely to fail if passcode is enabled (don't forget to enable it though after your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken).

3. Ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).

4. If you think it is taking a long time (or get the feeling that Absinthe isn't doing anything) then be patient. Check out the timings mentioned by us above for some of the steps.

5. If tips 1 and 2 don't help then iPhone Dev team has advised restoring your iPad 2 (which is not ideal). But our advise would be to try again after sometime as it could be very well due to the load on the servers.

[Received] - S Pen Holder for Samsung Galaxy Note

Received the original S Pen Holder from Samsung which I purchased on December 24, 2011 from eBay Malaysia.
It arrived about 12 Days (the seller promised within 20 days).
Price is quite reasonable at USD 52.99.
Since I love sketching, I would say the sketching using a longer and bigger "S Pen"is much better since it is like holding a normal pen.
I fully recommend this if you guys want to use the Pen more often. Furthermore, its easier to keep in shirt's pocket.

This is an awesome news for the A5 users. They have been waiting very patiently because their A4 counterparts (iPhone 4, iPad 1 etc) have their iOS 5.0.1 Jailbroken already.

Apple vs Google. "Closed" vs "Open".

I hate when some people give name calling to companies like Apple. Below is my respond to one of the Forum post in Low Yat Net.
This is also a continuation of my article posted regarding "Are you an Android or iOS Fan?"

Both Apple and Google have to different business strategy.
You cannot simply start calling names Apple as "n00bs" market segment or "kiddie toys" when you don't know how much Apple is worth as a Company nowadays.

Google makes money out of its advertising business. Thus, data, information and knowledge is very important for them. Google is not in the business of hardware like Apple. That's why they gave out Android almost for free (or totally free probably) to handset makers. Google is very clever in trying to make all smartphones to have Android. When people use their device, they will capture the user profile. Smartphones are more personal than normal desktops. Thus, usage of smartphones can be leverage by Google for Advertisements. Users are being profiled this way.

Now Google is moving another step further into the realm of "Internet of Things" or IoT. Why Google is interested in this? My personal opinion is that they would like to capture the profile of "Things" such as Fridge, Cars, Electrical appliances etc. These "things" will have sensors that sends out data. And this data is what Google is interested. In future, Google will exactly know what devices or "things" in your house and what are your buying preferences (brands, types etc).

But Apple Inc, is not trying to capture this market. They have tried to open their Macintosh OS to other hardware players previously but it failed. To understand why Apple have a "closed" system is to understand Apple history and how Steve Jobs built the Company. This is a long story and I suggest read the latest "Steve Jobs" book. But to make it short, Steve wanted to make his product a perfect product and closed. That's why people even have difficulty to open up Apple products without a proper tool (Apple even design a special screwdriver to open up their product). They don't even allow user to change the iPhone battery so easily! (Take a look at Samsung phone - see how many people in the Forum is trying to buy spare batteries!!).

Steve Jobs is meticulous in designing Apple products. Before Steve joined back Apple, the company has so many products that they need a Chart to show the product line. Steve terminated so many and finally chose a few to continue. Apple iOS is closed and they never allow users to mod it. But the hackers are always 1-step ahead of Apple. This cat-and-mouse game of Jailbreaking will always continue but that's what excite some of the users.

But why Apple chose a "closed" system as their business strategy? Apple not only in the software business but also in hardware business (unlike Google). Thus, selling hardware is also their main business and the only way is to ensure they control the Quality of their products is to have a "closed" system. Apple has Millions of users even before they launched iPhones. iPods and iTunes are the beginning of their Apple eco-system - now they have entered the music industry with iTunes and iPods/iPod Touch, TV industry with their Apple TV, phone industry with their iPhones, Games and Media industry with their iPads, Computing industry with their Macs and Cloud business with their iCloud.
As for the "closed eco-system" users, they will benefit from high quality and seamless usage experience (if you were to choose all products from Apple). What's more important for these kind of users are productivity and change the world with Apple products. Unlike most Android users who always "kill their time" with "modding" their gadgets but not doing so much about productivity (my personal opinion when reading the Forum posts).

Thus - Apple is not a eyeing a "n00b" market segment and neither its iPhone is a "kiddie" toy.
Learn more about both Companies and you will respect both of them. Its either you are in the "open" market segment or "closed" market" segment.

Its either you love it or hate it.

2012 - Best Year for Jailbreaking! - Note from p0sixninja

Recent tweets from hacker p0sixninja, greeted the new Year 2012 with "Best year for Jailbreaking" and recommended everyone to upgrade their devices to iOS 5.0.1 while they still have the chance! And this includes A5 devices (i.e. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners).
I suspected what he meant is that the release of untethered Jailbreak for A5 devices will be out soon. Thus, before Apple closes the iOS 5.0.1 sign-in with the patched iOS 5.1, its better for all users to upgrade their iOS to 5.0.1 (which I believed gonna be the version which untethered Jailbreak supports)

Disconnect any iPods, iPhones, and iPads from your computer.

Using Seas0nPass to jailbreak the AppleTV

Step 1: Unzip the 'Seas0nPass.zip' file and launch Seas0nPass.

Step 2: Select the 'Create IPSW' button to start the jailbreak process.

Step 3: The latest AppleTV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom 'jailbroken' software file.

Step 4: When prompted, connect your AppleTV to your Mac/PC using a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected).

Once the light on the front of the AppleTV begins to flash rapidly, point the remote at the AppleTV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Note: This step will require the silver (aluminum) AppleTV remote that was included with the ATV2. The older, white (plastic) remotes will not work.

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete - your AppleTV is now jailbroken!

Note: To confirm the jailbreak was successful a (temporary) red FC logo will appear in the lower right corner of the screen - as shown below.

Using Seas0nPass for a 'tethered boot'

Some AppleTV software versions require a tethered boot. This means the AppleTV must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note: The tethered boot steps described below are not required when using the latest 4.4.4 AppleTV software.

Note 2: The AppleTV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the 'Boot Tethered' option.

Step 2: When prompted, connect the AppleTV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the 'MENU' and 'PLAY/PAUSE' buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 3: Seas0nPass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the AppleTV stops flashing. (Don't worry there is ample to do this, so you don't need Superman speed).

I have been using an Android device for nearly a month now (Nov. 18, 2011). And maybe its about time to talk and confess what's my preference - am I a truly an Apple fan or have turned to the Dark Side?
Its like a Battle between Android vs iOS, Samsung vs Apple, Google vs Apple, Galaxy vs iPhone, Galaxy Note vs iPhone 4S. Everyone and every company wants to take a bite at the Apple.
Apple has built its Eco-System of developers and devices for quite sometime. Even before they introduced the iPhone, we already have been using their iTunes, iPods and Macs. Thus, it became very natural for most of their fans to use their next devices - iPhone and iPad.
Apple is amazing in making all the UI (User Interface) very friendly. Not only they controlled the hardware but they also controlled the OS (now they termed it as iOS). Even the latest Mac OS X Lion have similar IOS interface.
When Apple upgraded their Mobile Me to iCloud, it clearly showed the power of their iOS and the ability of seamless networking. Everytime, we updated or purchased new contents, it will automatically backup to iCloud. Our photos or edited documents will instantly appear in all devices.
Before Apple introduced the intelligent voice recognition named Siri, all of us can be called the "Touch" generation i.e. the only way to interact with the device is via "touch". But Apple has changed the way we interact with the device i.e. via voice. Siri is still in the Beta stage but soon all the things that we say will be captured and "learned" by Siri server. And by that time - Siri will be the Center Stage for the next Era of ubiquitous computing.
It has been rumored that the next big thing from Apple would be "Apple Television" with Siri built-in. No one knows how this will change the TV industry. The border between IT and broadcast industries will be blurred.
OK - now what is it like to own an Android from Google? I chose Samsung Galaxy Note as my first Android device.
Why a Samsung Galaxy Note? Reason - due to its awesome form factor that fits between an iPad and iPhone. My first thought and wish is to use the Note as a real "Note" to replace my Paper Diary/Notes. Just watching the Samsung videos can certainly attract anyone to buy a Note. Fancy having a single device that serves many purposes - a Phone and Tablet and a NOTE!
I will not get down to its technical details but would like to highlight as a first user to Android device. The first couple of weeks for me is like "hell" because as an Apple user for many users, I am used to the ease of iOS GUI. But the Android interface is like "walking in the jungle" - you can easily get lost!
Android is an "Open System" - thus it allows the user to tweak as much as you like. Each application has the ability to tweak and configure to you likings. Moving around the GUI (in my case it was Gingerbread) can sometimes really test my patience.
The first thing I do is to "Root" my Galaxy Note. Its quite easy but I need to use the PC to do that. This is what really annoys me - Android is not that user friendly with Mac OS. Most developers that create apps to "Root" or "Flash ROMS" are mainly meant for PC users. But ... I am a truly Mac user. It will take sometime to adjust and find the right utilities for my Mac to work with Android.
Most apps that can be found in iPhone are also available in Android Marketplace. However, not all apps cater for Samsung Galaxy Note. This is one of the disadvantages for developers to create apps i.e. to cater to too many variants of Android devices.
Samsung is notorious in developing so many sizes of their Galaxy devices. It can be 3-inch, 5-inch, 5-inch, 7-inch, 9-inch, 11-inch etc. I lost count of all the names and sizes. Samsung really flood the market with their models. This can be a good sign (i.e. to protect the market from Apple) or bad sign (they can't get good margin since they need to produce different volume of scale for different devices unlike Apple which only produce 1 phone per year).
What I love most about Galaxy Note in which iPhone or iPad can't do is the S Pen and the ability to Sketch. Its very easy to draw cartoons and "Share" to many of the Social Media sites.
Are there any other things which Galaxy Note can do but Apple devices can't? Nope - I don't think so. But again - as I said, its capability to sketch is awesome!
Android device is great for people who love to hack their devices. Apple don't allow the users to this easily unless someone have already jailbreak their device.
Android allow users to change their Themes, Widgets, Home Screens -this will make every Android device "different" from one another. Borrowing another Android device can be also a nightmare since the interface looks so different. But its either you HATE or LOVE it...!
So - what's my preference now? Its hard to say - I received my iPhone 4S nearly a week after I purchased my Galaxy Note.
Android and IOS are two different worlds. Its either you hate it or love it.
I love to explore new devices. I enjoyed exploring my iPhone 4 but currently the iPhone 4S which runs on A5 chip doesn't have the Untethered Jailbreak solution yet. Thus, I am stucked with whatever apps Apple has allowed me to use. And that's not fun for me. That's why I am still exploring the Galaxy Note.
In fact I am still buying more accessories for the Galaxy Note. Previously purchased a Leather Pouch. And recently S Pen Holder Kit from eBay!
My friends was really surprised when they heard I bought an Android device and bet that I will not use it for long. Not more than 1 month - they said. But surprise...surprise! Here I am ... still writing this Blog and updating information regarding the Galaxy Note!

[HOW-TO] - Downgrade iPad 2 GSM / CDMA From iOS 5.0.1 To iOS 4.3.3 Using TinyCFW

Notcom, the developer behind TinyUmbrella released a new tool called TinyCFW.
What TinyCFW is that it prevents any errors and looping when downgrading iPad 2 GSM / CDMA or iPhone 4 GSM / CDMA from iOS 5.0.1 / 5.0 to iOS 4.3.3 to get their jailbreak.
The reason why many of you might want to downgrade their iPad 2 from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 4.3.3 is that because there’s no any jailbreak available for iPad 2 except Comex’s JailbreakMe 3.0 which only works on iOS 4.3.3.
So if you’re one of those who accidently updated to iOS 5.x, having iOS 4.3.3 SHSH blobs and want to downgrade back, TinyCFW makes this process easier by creating a custom firmware that will be able to be recognized by TinyUmbrella so that the device can be downgraded.
iPhone 4 reasons might want to downgrade back to iOS 4.3.3 so that they get untethered jailbreak which is only available on that version.
However, pod2g and Dev-Team already released an untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices so ther's no reason to downgrade.

What TinyCFW is:

It will modify an existing ipsw for an ipad2 gsm/cdma or iphone4 gsm/cdma
It WILL modify the ipsw TO UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND TO THE LATEST!
It will create an ipsw that you can use with TinyUmbrella AND iTunes to restore to a version of iOS that you have SHSHs for.
It is primarily for iPad2 with a baseband OR iPhone 4.

What TinyCFW is NOT:

A jailbreak
An unlock
A tool to protect your baseband.
A tool that will restore your device to any firmware
A tool for use with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad, or iPhone 4S

Steps To Downgrade iPad 2 / iPhone 4 On iOS 5.0.1 To iOS 4.3.3

STEP 1: Download the required files below:

Download iOS 4.3.3 for iPad 2 or iPhone 4 from here.
Download TinyUmbrella (Windows / Mac)
Download TinyCFW (Windows - Jar)
Download iTunes from here.

STEP 2: Now start TinyCFW (note: you must have java installed and at least 2.5 GB of RAM). Once it opens, hit the top button and choose iOS 4.3.3 IPSW.

STEP 3: Now click on the second button so that TinyCFW will tell you the firmware and baseband versions.

STEP 4: Click on ‘Save Target IPSW’ then wait two minutes and you’ll get a file named:
.bbupdate.ipsw

STEP 5: Now open Tinyumbrella and make iTunes look at Cydia’s Server from the “Advanced” options.

STEP 6: Plug your iPad 2, switch it off, and put it in DFU mode.

STEP 7: Finally open iTunes and select the custom firmware you created above to restore your iPad 2.

Once restored, you’llget your iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3.
You can then head to JailbreakMe.com and start jailbreaking your device

[HOW-TO] - Download AppSync For iOS 5 To Install Cracked Apps On iOS 5

One of the most known tweaks in Cydia is AppSync which allows you to install cracked apps on your iOS devices.
AppSync for iOS 5 now makes its way to Cydia.
AppSync for iOS 5 allows you to install cracked apps on iOS 5. For those of you who don’t know, AppSync patches MobileInstallation file on iOS which is needed in order to install .ipa files manually without using iTunes.
Of course your iPhone must be jailbroken on iOS 5 to be able to install AppSync for iOS 5. AppSync is available in individual repository so you’ll have to add the repo on your own.
Just head to Cydia, then Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add and type the following repository: “http://cydia.hackulo.us” then hit Add Source.
Now go back and search for AppSync for iOS 5 then install it

[HOW-TO]: Fix "This device isn’t eligible for the requested build" Problem

I have this problem when I tried to upgrade my iPad 1 to iOS 5.0.1. Each time I tried I got the following message: “The iPad "your_ipad_name" could not be restored . This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.“

Thankfully the solution is simple and falls into one of two areas:

The iOS version that’s been downloaded isn’t the right one for the device.
There’s an entry in your host file redirecting Apple traffic to another location.

In most cases, it’ll be the second option.

Mac OS X

1. On your Mac, open your Applications folder.

2. Navigate to the Utilities folder.

3. Open Terminal.

4. Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and press enter.

5. Enter your password

6. Use the down arrow key to find the gs.apple.com entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering # in front of the text.

7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O.

8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X.

9. Restore your iDevice.

Windows

1. Press Start, then Programs, then Accessories

2. Launch Notepad or WordPad

3. Click Open from File menu.

4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc

5. In “files of type:” select all documents

6. Open “hosts”

7. Delete all line that have gs.apple.com or similar

8. Hit Save

9. Restore your device

The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now! The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1 If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW! See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how. Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam. The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration. If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup! You will most likely get into a reboot cycle. Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

For Users On Stock iOS 5.0.1:

If your device is running stock iOS 5.0.1 then you can use download the latest Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 to for either Windows or Mac to give yourself an untethered jailbreak, instructions for which can be found below.

Quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 3: Wait for Redsn0w to apply the full untethered jailbreak!

Once done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will be rebooted into fully untethered jailbreak mode!

UPDATE:

I saw two shops selling the same model at Low Yat Plaza. One of them selling at RM 290++ and the other at RM 330++. Lucky, my eBay purchased is way cheaper than the ones in Low Yat.
This device need more than 12 hours to get it fully charge.
My initial experience is its able to charge 3 devices (iPhone 4S, iPad and Galaxy Note) although some review mentioned it can charge to 5-6 times.

Pod2G was busy last Sunday to solve the untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S iOS 5.0/5.0.1 when he managed to get an iPhone 4S to test.
However, on Dec. 19, 2011, he reported in his pod2g's Blog that the untether fails.
But on Dec. 20, 2011, saurik, the iOS guru helped in solving one of the missing puzzle.
How soon will we be able to get the Untethered Jailbreak? Is it before or after Xmas? or before New Year?

Hello.

Here are the news of the 4S week-end.
The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues.
I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.
I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance.
I'll report you my progress tomorrow.
BTW: I removed (sorry) the greetings messages so that only articles related to the jailbreak remain in the main page. AFAIK Blogger don't have the option to move or fusion messages while keeping the comments.

No more cache troublesOK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore.
I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.
It took me like a hundred of tests to find the key. Hard for the nerves.

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he's found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He's definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

The Amazon Appstore launched recently and it's very cool, but unfortunately it's limited to US customers, leaving the rest of us out in the cold. Which sucks. BUT, there are ways around it! Successfully using the Appstore relies on you having a US presence - a US credit card, a US address and a US phone number (handily, not a US IP), but there are ways to meet this criteria.

Here's how i'm happily using the Amazon Appstore on by device from the UK.

I've listed two options for each step of the process below. First is what I would call the 'recommended' way of doing things and the second is a slightly more dubious alternative approach (albeit perhaps easier). I'm using the recommended way, but I've been told the other way works.

Step 1 - Creating your Amazon account

To use the Appstore, first you need to create an Amazon.com account. This should be seperate from your main account, with a unique e-mail address. I use Gmail so I have a handy facility to provide a unique e-mail address built in to my e-mail account... by signing up with the address myname+appstore@gmail.com (everything after the + is ignored in Gmail routing but can be used for filtering etc.).

To sign up with Amazon.com,visit the Amazon.com sign in page and select 'No, I am a new customer'.

Step 2 - Setting up your billing address

Next you need to set up a US address (which will be the billing address you associate with the payment card on the account) - you do this on the Manage Address Book page. This MUST be a valid US address.

Recommended: I signed up for a 'USUnlocked' virtual payment card ($10) which provides you with a legitimate US billing address to enter in your account. I signed up for this on a weekend and had the details available to me the same day. Other virtual cards are available, let us know if you find a good one with a real US billing address!
Alternative: You don't actually plan to get anything shipped to this address, so you COULD enter any valid US address here, e.g. '1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043' (which happens to be the home of Google).

Step 3 - Setting up your phone number

While setting up your address in the step above, you will be prompted for a phone number. This MUST be a US phone number.

Recommended: The easiest way to get a valid US address is via a SIP account (I use sipgate.com, which I signed up to using a free US VPN service. Hotspot Shield is one such service.) There are however many SIP providers who provide US inbound numbers (including Google Voice, which you should also be able to configure with a US VPN connection), so this part is pretty straightforward.
Alternative: You don't actually plan on receiving any calls to this number, so you COULD just enter any number starting with +1. Easier than that, you can just enter +1!

Step 4 - Setting up your payment card

Next you need to set up a US payment card - you do this on the Manage Payment Options page. This MUST be a valid US card (my UK Amex for example wasn't accepted).

Recommended: As mentioned above, I signed up for a 'USUnlocked' virtual payment card ($10) which provides you with a Discover card number to enter in your account.
Alternative: You don't actually plan to buy anything with this card, so you COULD use a test card number from one of the card companies, such as those listed by PayPal.

Step 5 - Install the AppStore on your device

Now that you've set up your Amazon account, you need to install the Appstore on your device. Point your web browser at http://go.modaco.com/aadownload and the APK will be downloaded directly to your device.

Once the app is installed, run it and sign in with your new Amazon.com account and you're all set!

Step 6 (optional) - Purchasing paid apps from the Amazon Appstore

If you've set up the account with a valid US payment card then paid apps will just work. If the card you have registered is either empty of funds or a 'test card', payments will fail. BUT, helpfully, retrying payments can be carried out with any card, from any country! So, to buy an app...

Purchase the app in the Appstore on the Amazon website or on your device - the initial payment will fail
Visit the Digital Orders Page page and you will see your pending purchases
Choose the option to retry the purchases, this time using your non-US card
The payments will complete and you will be able to download the apps on your device

Step 1: Install PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta on your PlayBook [Official Website]

Step 2: Root your BlackBerry PlayBook with DingleBerry [Instructions].

Step 3: Download Google Apps [CyanogenMod Wiki].

Step 4: Package an Android app as a .bar file, install and launch it to set things up. Consider installing a launcher app since it will be required later on to actually launch Market. Get one from here [PlayBook BARS]

Step 5: Using WinSCP for Windows, log into your BlackBerry PlayBook as root. Copy the system folder from Google Apps in Step 3 to the root of your PlayBook’s storage and merge it with the PlayBook’s own system folder.

Step 6: Using a terminal with root access, enter the following commands:

mv /system/app/SetupWizard.apk /system/app/SetupWizard.apk.bak

Step 7: You must now kill the Android Player with:

cd /apps/sys.android.XXXX.ns/native/scripts

and then run ./android-player-cmd.sh kill-android-core.sh

The XXXX above is different for each device.

Step 8: Using a launcher from Step 4, launch Android Market and enter account details.

If you followed the steps correctly, Android Market will now be installed and working on your BlackBerry PlayBook.

Running iOS 5 and iCloud and wondering how you can manually trigger a backup? iCloud will automatically backup at some point during the day when you’re on Wi-Fi, but if you need to replace or restore your phone, or you know you’ll be leaving for a while and want to make sure the backup is done before you go, you do have that option.

Here’s what to do:

First tap into your Settings app and tap into iCloud.

On this screen you’ll see a list of all the services you are syncing with iCloud.
Scroll down a bit further and you’ll see a button labeled Storage & Backup. Tap it.

Scroll all the way down to the Backup sections and you will see a button labeled Back Up Now. Tap it to start creating an iCloud backup.

iCloud will begin creating a backup for you. It can do this in the background so you can continue using your device like normal while the process completes.

iCloud will create backups for you regularly but it will only perform a backup when you are connected to Wifi and plugged in to a charging outlet. So as a note to users on tiered data plans, if you need to create an iCloud backup manually at least make sure you are on Wifi if at all possible.

Recently (Nov. 27, 2011), Greenp0ison website recently posted an article explaining about the progress of the untethered Jailbreak. It seems that the team will be having a no-holds-barred information WAR against Apple.

Its a cat-and-mouse game when it comes to Jailbreaking.

So, I don't think we will be able to see the untethered Jailbreak solution soon. In the meantime, people can still either use the semi-tethered or tethered Jailbreak first. But that will be on their own risk. There is always a possibility that the new method required a clean iOS.

My Experience - The First 5 Days Using iPhone 4S

What's so different between the iPhone 4 and the 4S?
I got my hands on the 4S a couple of days back (Nov. 22, 2011 - see my last post), and I must admit that I don't have enough time to experiment with the phone yet and cannot provide a conclusive judgement yet. However, let me comment some of things which I discovered after using it for a few days.
I predict Siri will be the new technology that will change the way that we interact with the Smartphones. We used Keyboard, and later Touch, and now we are able to Talk. Siri, unlike other "stupid" and "not so intelligent" voice recognition application, it responds naturally to your commands. Siri's brain actually in the "Cloud" or so-called "Siri's server" and requires the Internet to make it work. It is understandable because no smartphone in the world is capable of handling such intelligent voice recognition system. Thus, it requires the server to do that. Imagine one day, Siri is able to learn your profile and even suggest a "restaurant", a "movie" and might also remind you about your calendar. Technologies are already available to make it more intelligent, but unfortunately the network is not ubiquitous enough, and the battery is still limited.
Talking about battery consumption, this iPhone 4S really drain the batter very fast. I am not sure whether its really the software problem which Apple have updated its iOS to 5.0.1, or is it just because we use the iPhone a lot more than before. In the excitement of using Siri, we tend to forget that its draining the battery fast!
Since iPhone is equipped with a better CPU and higher camera resolution, taking photos are becoming snappier and browsing the Internet is far faster than the iPhone 4.
I love the iOS 5 Notification Centre! In fact, it brings quite a number of tweaks found in Cydia to the iOS 5. This is the beauty of having a bunch of hackers that provide excellent feedbacks to Apple to improve their iOS.

Using my First Android Smartphone

Bought this gadget after a quick review regarding the how Galaxy Notes fits the professionals who wish to use this gadget in their everyday works. I thought it fits my requirements and thus went to Sg. Wang and here it is! My first Android smartphone!
I have always been an avid user and owner of Apple gadgets. To be one of the user that tries to move to the "dark side", I would say it was a really challenging one!
Android user interface is like a "jungle" - You can virtually get yourself lost in it! Even though this Samsung model came with Gingerbread the GUI is still so unfamiliar to me!
Getting around the apps and changing configurations are so difficult (for a person who have been using a simple GUI from Apple since the iPod and iPhone days). Initially I can virtually "vomit" and making me crazy.
However, one particular application called "Aptoide" actually saves my Samsung Galaxy from being an expensive idle toy... You don't need to Jailbreak (iPhone style) to get a similar feature like "Aptoide".
There are few things that attract me: the screen display and the S Pen feature.
The screen is so much clear and because of its size, watching video is much better than the iPhone.
S Pen is great during meetings whereby you don't want to carry bulky diary or notepads and just jotting down some notes. In a boring meeting session, its great for scribbling and making graffiti. I love its simple way to capture screenshots, edit and later email to friends or post to our favorite social websites.

A ‘little bird” revealed that Celcom would have launch their iPhone 4S on Nov. 26 which is to be 1 day (Nov. 25, 2011) after Maxis launch., but unfortunately for unknown reasons, the launch has been deferred with no specific date.
However today Apple Online US have recently opened for orders without contract.
This can be the other reason why Malaysia is being deferred - to control and manage to worldwide shortage of iPhone 4S.

Maxis Launching iPhone 4S on Nov. 25, 2011

It is now widely speculated in Low Yat Net Forum discussions that Maxis will launch by Nov. 25, 2011 according to some insider information (there is a "big event" in Maxis soon).

It might be true due to several reasons:

Apple released a press information that there will be another 15 countries to launch by 11/11/11.
70 more countries before the end of the year. This most likely include Malaysia.
Singapore have already launched theirs - both at their telcos and the Apple Online Singapore. Malaysia's black market is now full by iPhone 4S sets from Singapore and recently from Hong Kong. Now, Malaysian credit cards can be use to purchase the iPhone 4S but need to be delivered to Singapore address (unlike last year where we can only use Singapore credit cards)
Singapore Apple Online only open orders 21 and 22 Oct but later closed for new online orders.
However, yesterday, Singapore Apple online opened again (temporary) for 64GB iPhone 4S models. Delivery date is between 1-2 weeks (Shipping 17-24 Nov).
This is what I believed Nov. 25, 2011 will be the date for the Malaysia to launch their iPhone 4S.
The staggered launching of iPhone 4S is probably Apple wants to control their supply chain. There is always a shortage of iPhone 4S worldwide.
Most probably there will be no Malaysia Apple Online iPhone 4S in order to give the local telcos (Maxis, Celcom and Digi) a good head start.

“Beginning Friday, November 11, iPhone 4S will be available in Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania and South Korea. iPhone 4S is available today in 29 countries around the world and will be available in more than 70 countries by the end of the year. “

It seems iPhone 4S will be available in Malaysia before Dec. 31, 2011 (unless Malaysia is not even in the list of 70 countries). My best bet would be 1-2 weeks before Christmas. Expect the 2 week of December for iPhone 4S. However, I am not sure whether its going to available Apple Store Online Malaysia or just the local telcos.

Singapore iPhone 4S Apple Online still "Currently Available". Why?

The iPhone 4S is now formally on sale in 22 more countries, following an expansion of preorders exactly a week ago. For the time being Apple has adopted a European focus; new regions include Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. More regions should be added over the course of the next several months.
Apple’s shipping times for most countries are still said to one to two weeks.
An exception however is in Singapore, where the Apple lists the 4S as “currently unavailable.”
I have been waiting to order from Singapore since I missed the pre-order boat on 21 Oct.
Not sure when SG Apple Online Store will be open again for iPhone 4S orders.

Admittedly, the option to tell iCloud which specific apps you want backed up is somewhat buried, but the chart below walks you through finding it, left to right, with detailed instructiion

1. First, go to Settings and select iCloud. You'll see some apps here, but notice these are only the pre-installed Apple apps! We want to find all the apps.
2. Scroll down to Storage & Backup, and tap it.
3. Choose the third choice shown, Manage Storage.
4. Select the entry for your phone under Backups. Mine is named simply "Jill's Phone."
5. Here, you'll see a list of the top five storage-using apps. Scroll down and click Show All, and then select, app by app, which items you want to back up.
6. Decide which of your apps you don't want to back up; toggle those to "off." A red button reading "Turn Off & Delete" will appear. If you click it, you'll still have the app and its data locally on your iPhone; you're just "deleting" its data from iCloud's backup.
At the bottom of the screen, you'll see how much space you have available. If you can clean up your app backup, you should be able to better optimize that free 5GB. Of course, if you want to back up everything, you can pay Apple for extra storage space, starting at $20 a year for 10GB more.
